Making the Switch: The Cost of Changing Electricity Companies

If you live in one of the 17 states that have a deregulated electricity market, chances are that you’re well-versed in shopping around for your electricity provider. At Spark Energy, we have our switching procedure down to a science. It all starts with the three types of switches: standard, self-selected, and move-in.

Spark is proud to offer new customers a no-cost transfer service for a standard switch to one of our products. If you want to switch electricity providers at your current address, and aren’t picky about exactly which date your electricity is switched over, you want the standard switch. With a standard switch, you’ll be switched to Spark Energy within seven days. The best part– it’s free!

If, however, you’re interested in a self-selected switch, you may incur fees depending on your area. If you want to switch electricity providers at your current address, but you want control over exactly which date your switch takes place, you should choose a self-selected switch. Click here to see what that charge would be for your area.

Or, maybe you’re just moving into Spark territory and are excited to start a new account with us. If you want electricity service and you have never had it at the address where you’d like to start your service, it qualifies as a move-in. Click here to see what the move-in fee is for your area.

Once you’ve made the switch, you get to investigate further. To determine whether you’re actually saving any money, take a closer look at those charges on your electricity bill. Your Spark bill is broken down into sections: supply + transmission and delivery.Note: The savings we advertise on our site related specifically to the supply portion of your electricity service.

First, take out your latest electric bill and look for the rates associated with supply and transmission. They are often listed above the delivery rates. Here’s an example:

Electricity Supply Charge: 0.06968
Transmission Services Charge: 0.00765
? ————-
$0.07733 x 100 = 7.73¢

That $.07733 is your total supply rate. Multiply that by 100 to get your Price to Compare of 7.73¢ per kilowatt-hour (kWh). This is the number that you can use to compare with the other electricity suppliers’ rates.
